Dave Lee Roth

Whitley Bay Ice Rink

23 February 1991 (?)

(Twenty-Nine Years Later)

(I am very suspicious of this date. I think I saw Dave Lee Roth a couple of years earlier than this, and I think it was in the summer. But this is the only Whitley Bay date the Internet is offering me, so I'm going to go with it until I can prove otherwise.)

At the end of the 80s, DLR was the person to see in concert. Everybody said he put on one of the best live experiences.

And it's true. He was one of the best showman I've seen. He clowns around, tells jokes and does comedy monologues, has silly props on stage, has roadies carry him through the crowd. It's hugely entertaining.

The thing is, I don't remember any of his music. I remember the jokes and monologues really well, but nothing of what he actually sang. There are a couple of hits that I know he must have performed, but my memory of them is a complete blank.

So ... was it the best concert I had ever seen? I certainly think it must have been the most entertaining, and I know I was glad I'd gone. I think everybody ought to see DLR once. But there's probably no need to see him twice.
